Exploring the viability of a DIY Motorcycle Garage in Evansville, IN

video

MotoFoundry in a nutshell

My goal is to build out a DIY motorcycle garage to provide a space, tooling, and foster a motorcycle hands-on repair maker space that adds to our motorcycle community in and around Evansville, IN. To create a place to share knowledge and work with our hands, without the need for members to bring or purchase specialized tools and equipment.

The gym paradigm

Similar to each of us not having to own a full gym, with squat racks, benches, barbells, bumper plates (well you get the picture), in our home, just to work out. We patronize our favorite fitness facility, with a membership structure that provides access to all the necessary equipment. The same model applies to the concept of MotoFoundry, a place to go to wrench on motorcycles, where the tools are provided, fluids are disposed of, cleaning products are supplied, and coffee is consumed. This is not a new idea as it exists in other cities with varying degrees of success.

Value Proposition

Affordability

Performing your motorcycle maintenance can save you a significant amount of money on labor costs. You also will not need to invest in tooling as these will be supplied.

Convenience

While I am in the planning stage, generally speaking, a DIY motorcycle garage would be centrally located (in Evansville), making it easy to get to/from to maintain and/or build your motorcycle. My goal for the garage is to have flexible hours, so we can work on our respective bikes when it's convenient for each of us.

Community

Provide an open sense of community and camaraderie for motorcycle enthusiasts regardless of age or gender. To create an environment where people feel comfortable to ask questions, share tips and tricks, help each other out with projects, and just hang out and talk about motorcycles.

Equipment

Provide a wide range of specialized motorcycle tools and equipment that would be prohibitively expensive for most individuals to purchase on their own.

Documentation

Provide in-house online access to manuals where available to assist members in performing maintenance on their specific model of motorcycle. The detailed specifications for all parts and systems of your motorcycle, such as torque settings, fluid capacities, and adjustment and troubleshooting procedures, will help you become more self-reliant, so you can save your hard-earned money for life's other expenses.

Parts Portal

Build out a parts search portal that aggregates social media site postings into a central web presence.  Meta (Facebook & Instagram) has become a platform used by folks to post parts for sale from older, donor bikes. Provide a single-pane-of-glass search for parts across multiple sites to put more eyeballs on sellers' parts.  This is in the inception phase at this point, design to follow.
